Our strength lies not only in the words we stand by, but most importantly in the actions of our initiatives. From the moment we started our work, we understood that by working together we could overcome poverty and abuse challenges much more efficiently, and that is why we ultimately decided to launch A Dwelling Place Inc. We seek to support, empower, and provide high-quality resources to the community.

We strive to make a positive change for all who come to us.
About Us

Meet the Team

Dawn Dunkman
President and Co-Founder
I am a bio and adoptive mom of 5, and live with my husband, Bill of 42 years, in Westfield, IN. We are blessed with 13 grandchildren and one on the way! As a former foster and adoptive mom, I saw firsthand how broken the system was. The answer to doing away with the need for foster care lies in rebuilding the foundation for families in crisis lacking the support system needed to thrive. This focus removes the “us and them” mentality. Once I saw it, I could not un-see! My heart attitude changed from being judgmental and assuming to being full of compassion and a desire to help! I knew when I read the scripture Isaiah 58:12, that this is what God was talking about. We the church are called to be repairers of the breach. I had found the breach, it was time to begin rebuilding!

Emily Williams
Vice President and Co-Founder
I am a mother to 5 amazing kids and I’ve been married to my husband, Dwayne, for 20 years. God has been breaking my heart for orphans and widows for a good portion of my life. Being a part of a non-profit where I am able to help preserve the family unit in some way felt like the perfect fit.
Quote: James 2:15-16 says, “Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?” How might God be calling you?

Marla Hood
Secretary of the Board
I am a mother of 5, 3 biological and 2 adopted. Many years ago, our neighbors adopted 2 brothers and we watched that process from the sidelines. Then 10 years ago, God sent a 6 week old and his 3 year old little sister to our family. We ultimately adopted them both , and I developed a heart for helping families. Everyone needs a support system, and we can be a part of that support! I am so blessed to be able to be a small part of helping families.

Trina Helderman
Treasurer
I am single and have served as a short-term foster parent and an “auntie” to many. I have spent most of my career working with non-profits providing health care and nutrition support to communities affected by disasters and conflicts overseas. Now living in Indianapolis, I desired to find a way to use my experiences and skills to help support local communities particularly those families struggling with their own crisis. I love how A Dwelling Place Inc comes alongside families to provide community and resources to keep families together, give them a boost up and let them know they are loved and cared for by an incredibly kind and gracious God.

Erik Barber
Executive Director of Operations
I am a father of 3 girls: 11, 8, and 1.5 years old. I have been attending Mercy Road Carmel, where I met the Dunkman and Williams families, for 5 years.
I currently work in digital marketing as a key account manager but spent the majority of the last ten years in consultative positions (sales, financial services, hospitality). I have also served on the Board of Directors for another non-profit called Indy Hygiene Hub, as both the CFO and VP.

Vanessa Brown
Executive Director, Strategy and Planning
I am a devoted Christian, wife to Scott, and mom to Emmy (20) and Ethan (19). I am also an HR leader and cherish family time, playing tennis, practicing yoga, and serving Mercy Kids and the food pantry. My challenging journey through the foster care system, heart for children in need, and God’s guidance in James 2:14 inspired me to support A Dwelling Place's mission. I pray to make a meaningful impact on the families we serve.

James 2:14: “What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone?”
